AngelFISH has been one of our holiday programs now for nearly ten years. We "match" donors from this area with the children of many of our clients. Donors receive the "wish lists" of these children and are asked to spend about $75 per child.
Who are these donors? They include individuals, families, churches, local businesses, schools, and community groups. Many donors choose AngelFISH as a means to help their own children or grandchildren learn about giving to those in need. Last year, we helped to put smiles on the faces of about 275 children.
Numerous volunteers and donors work to make the AngelFISH program a success. Volunteers are needed to help with our client registration which occurs in mid-October. Those clients who want to be a part of AngelFISH bring in their children(s) "wish lists" which are then used to help donors shop for specific needs and wishes. In early December, there are three days when everything comes together--usually the second Thursday thru Saturday in December. With thanks to St. Joseph Church in Lake Orion, their Myrick Hall cafeteria has been the drop-off center for gifts. Volunteers double check everything so that the gifts will be ready for our families to pick up on Saturday morning.
Donors are eager for their wish lists to arrive so they can take advantage of early holiday sales. With that in mind, we try very hard to send them these lists the first week of November. We, also, have what are called "bonus tables". The bonus tables are amazing with an array of clothing, sporting goods, and games, crafts, wrapping paper, and stocking stuffers. While the donors give very generously, the bonus tables give moms and dads a chance to do a bit of "shopping" for their children on their own. The bonus tables are a very well-received addition to AngelFISH. It is hard to determine what will be donated, but everything is new. Sometimes, we even receive blankets, towels, or pillows which are always welcomed. All gifts are given with a wonderful spirit which gives hope to so many families.
In addition to AngelFISH, we offer Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets to our clients at this time of year. Volunteers meet at the FISH pantry to help sort and pack bags for these baskets.
